GCSE and Functional Skills Mathematics

General Course Overview:

The maths courses at YEP are designed to empower learners by building essential numeracy skills, problem-solving abilities, and mathematical confidence. They develop essential mathematical skills for learners at different levels, offering both GCSE Mathematics (foundation) and Functional Skills Mathematics (E1-L2). The courses aim to provide the knowledge and confidence needed to improve everyday numeracy, meet job requirements, or progress to higher education, apprenticeships, or employment.

  • Initial assessments and prior attainment will determine the most appropriate level for the learner.

  • Small-group learning for personalised attention.

  •  To encourage logical thinking and systematic problem-solving.

  • To build confidence and reduce maths anxiety through targeted support and flexible teaching approaches.

  • Regular formative assessments and feedback to monitor progress.

  •  Supportive teaching tailored to individual learner needs

  • To encourage learners to see the value and relevance of maths in real-life situations.

GCSE Mathematics (Foundation Tier):  The course follows the national curriculum but is delivered in a flexible, supportive environment that meets individual learning needs and promotes positive engagement.

 Key Topics Covered:

  1. Number – Arithmetic, factors, fractions, decimals, percentages, and ratio.

  2. Algebra – Expressions, equations, sequences, graphs, and formulae.

  3. Geometry and Measures – Shapes, angles, perimeter, area, volume, and transformations.

  4. Statistics and Probability – Collecting, representing, and interpreting data; basic probability.

 Assessment:

Students will work towards a Foundation level GCSE qualification. Assessment is through three final exam papers set by an accredited exam board. Full support is provided for students with access requirements where appropriate.

Outcomes:
Learners will achieve a GCSE Mathematics qualification, providing a vital stepping stone for further education, apprenticeships, and employment. More importantly, students will gain practical mathematical skills and a renewed confidence in their academic potential.

• Functional Skills Mathematics (Entry Level to Level 1): Functional Skills Mathematics is designed to develop the core maths skills needed for practical, real-world situations including independent living, employment, and further study. It Functional skills is offered at various levels from Entry level 1 up to Level 2, providing a starting point dependent on prior ability.

Key Topics:

  1. Using Numbers – Whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, and ratios.

  2. Common Measures – Time, money, length, weight, capacity, and temperature.

  3. Shape and Space – Understanding position, shape, area, and perimeter.

  4. Handling Data – Collecting, organising, and interpreting information in charts, tables, and graphs.

  5. Problem Solving – Applying maths in practical contexts such as budgeting, shopping, travel planning, and work-related tasks.

Assessment:
Learners work towards Functional Skills Maths Entry Level 1–3, Level 1, or Level 2, depending on their starting point. Assessment is through externally set exams set by an accredited exam board where they will complete a non calculator section and a calculator section.

Syeda Haque: Lead English Teacher

I am the lead English teacher at Youth Education Project and have been working at the centre since August 2016. My experience here has been one of great rewards as I have been able to make a positive difference to the lives of many of the young people in our centre over the last 9 years.

With a strong background in English language, I deliver tailored lessons that focus on improving writing skills, understanding, analysis, and creative writing to name a few. Whether this requires help in understanding complex sentences, tackling unseen texts, or refining your persuasive techniques, my sessions provide a clear explanation and practical strategies to enhance my students’ confidence and performance on all topics linked to the subject.

I am also a qualified AQA examiner and mark summer series GCSE exam papers every year, so the content of our lessons is always up to date and refreshed.

English is not just about reading and writing, it is about understanding the language that we use day to day to develop and better understand the world around us. This not only promotes growth within Education but also helps an individual to flourish as a whole.
